Romans 5:12-21 | Death in Adam, Life in Christ
We live in a radically individualistic culture. We regularly hear the creed of individualism preached from media pulpits and the mantra that this country was founded on the principle of "rugged individualism." This idea not only permeates our political culture but also runs rampant in our social culture. Now people have Facebook, X, Instagram, Snapchat, and the like that are devoted to promoting themselves, their own ideas, and their own following. The highly individualistic nature of American culture is even reflected in a common evangelistic question that we ask: "If you were to die tonight and stand before the throne of God, why should he let you into his Kingdom?" The question suggests that we will stand before God's throne as individuals. This sometimes inadvertently conveys the idea that we are accountable for our personal sin. Now, while this is all true, it is not the only relationship in which we will stand before the throne of God. We will stand before God's throne not only as individuals but also as represented by one of two men, either the first or last Adam. We must recognize that we are both individuals and part of a corporate body. This is the important truth contained in the passage of Scripture before us.
