What is baptism?
Baptism is an OUTWARD EXPRESSION of an INWARD CHANGE, and is one of the most powerful ways that we can carry the name of Jesus to the world. In obedience to the command and example of Christ, baptism declares to the world that:
Baptism symbolizes that our old self is gone (going under the water) and our new self has come (coming above the water), and that we have been made alive in Christ. If you would like to be baptized at Evident Church, we have only one question for you: is Jesus your Lord and Savior?
Jesus as Savior. We are all sinners (Romans 3:23), destined to a physical and spiritual death (Romans 6:23). But because of his sacrificial love, Jesus Christ, who was without sin (2 Corinthians 5:21), has paid the price of our sin by sacrificing himself to a brutal death on a cross (Romans 5:8), so that whoever calls on his name will be saved (John 3:16-17; Romans 10:9-13). You claim Jesus as your Savior by confessing your sins (I John 1:9) and claiming Jesus as your Lord.
Jesus as Lord. Claiming Jesus as your Lord is stating that not only has he forgiven you of your past, but has given you a future (I Peter 1:3-4), and that you are giving Him control of that future.
Baptism symbolizes and celebrates your decision to follow Jesus (1 Peter 3:21). The power that brought Jesus back to life is the same power Jesus uses to change our lives (Romans 8:11) – and that’s worth getting excited about!
If you have never been baptized after salvation, baptism is your first step!
